FAQS: CHOOSING A THERAPIST

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN CHOOSING A THERAPIST:

  • MAKING A CONNECTION – find a counselor that is a good fit for your personality and style in order to get the most out of therapy.
    • Is this a good match?
    • Do you feel seen, heard, and understood?
    • Is this someone with whom you could share your thoughts and feelings no matter what they are?

  • THERAPIST CREDENTIALS
    • Education – All the therapists at BPC have the legally required credentials and appropriate educational backgrounds.
    • Expertise – Does the therapist have experience with your issue? Do you need a couples therapist or an individual therapist?
    • Special skills – Some therapists have training in particular therapeutic techniques (hypnosis, somatic experiencing, guided imagery and music, EMDR, etc).

  • PRACTICAL DETAILS
    • Payment –
      • Self Pay – Can you afford the fee? Do you need a reduced fee?
      • Insurance – Do you need a preferred provider? Do you have out of network benefits (sometimes known as Point of Service or POS)?
    • Location – Is the therapist’s office convenient?
    • Time – Can you find a mutually acceptable meeting time?
